| My husband and I went on the Saturday excursion to the Farallons mid-October, and it was a great experience. Yes, it was cold and damp, and yes, it was a while before we saw any whales (over an hour from departing), but it was so worth it! We were dressed warmly, with layers, plus the crew provided some rainjackets that really helped, but it was still quite chilly. But if you come prepared, it's not an issue. We were told that they could not guarantee that we would see any whales, which of course makes since being that they are wild animals and are unpredictable. But the staff was very friendly and seemed extremely knowledgable (and enthusiastic!). The captain did a great job of finding whales. We saw many humpback whales from a distance, breeching and flapping their fins, plus we saw a blue whale and a grey whale. We also saw a group of seals "porpoising" because we were in shark territory (although we didn't see any sharks). The highlight of the trip was when a humpback whale swam right up to our boat, surfaced, swam underneath it, and surfaced another two or three times right beside us! It blew out of it's blowhole and looked right at us! We were so close we could see the barnacles on it's jaw! It was absolutely AMAZING and an incredible experience. I think we got pretty lucky to have a whale come that close to us, but it goes to show you never know how these creatures are going to respond. This whale was curious and friendly, but not at all threatening or scared of us. I will never forget that whale who came to say hi! I would absolutely recommend this excursion to anyone who is going to be in the San Francisco area, and it is definitely worth the price. | |||||||
