Lobtailing Humpback Whales!
Today was a great day on the Kitty Kat. Whale watchers got an incredible opportunity to witness 5 Humpback whales loptailing! Lobtailing is a behavior in which the whale aligns themselves vertical in the water and then thrust their fluke (tail) against the surface of the water creating a loud slapping sound. Scientists believe it may be a foraging behavior that the whales use to stun their prey. It is theorized that by creating a loud sound, the fish become frightened and tighten into a more compact school; making it easier for the whales to feed on them.
Pretty neat! The Humpbacks weren't the only whales viewers saw....they also saw....Gray whales! The huge 40-50ft whales have been feeding along the Farallon islands since the spring and have been spotted frequently since.
Other sights included Pacific Harbor seals, California sea lions, Harbor porpoises, a black-footed Albatross, and a Tufted puffin!
